Campflare is free, has no paywall, and covers more reservation systems than we do by their own count. It also has a native iOS app and alerts for wilderness permits (Mt. Whitney, Enchantments, Yosemite), which Camping Alert doesn't offer today. If you camp occasionally and just want a free safety net, it's a solid choice.
Campflare's own site says scan frequency "depends on the campground — the more popular the campground, the more we check it," with no published interval for less-popular sites. Camping Alert scans on a guaranteed interval — every 5 minutes on paid plans, every 60 on the free tier, regardless of how popular the campground is. If you're watching a quiet campground nobody else is watching, that consistency matters.
Both services tell you the moment a site opens. Neither Campflare's site nor its app documentation mention historical data or cancellation-probability scoring. Camping Alert's probability score — based on historical drop rates, current booking percentage, lead time, and holiday patterns — shows which dates are likeliest to open before you even set an alert, so you can plan around the odds instead of just reacting to them.
We're not going to argue free is worse than paid — for a lot of campers, Campflare's free tier is genuinely enough. What you get by paying for Camping Alert is a stated, guaranteed scan rate, flexible natural-language date search, radius-based area search, and cancellation probability data — none of which are part of Campflare's public feature set today.
