About Acadia National Park
Blackwoods, on Mount Desert Island close to Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mountain, is the campground most visitors want and the one that fills first. Seawall, on the island's quieter west side, offers a real alternative without giving up much in the way of access. Schoodic Woods sits on the mainland portion of the park, a genuinely different (and generally easier-to-book) experience from the island campgrounds. Duck Harbor, on Isle au Haut, is remote enough that it operates on its own logic entirely.

What to Expect
Blackwoods sits on Mount Desert Island's east side, a short drive from Bar Harbor's restaurants and shops and close to Cadillac Mountain, Sand Beach, and the Park Loop Road — which is exactly why it's Acadia's hardest booking. Seawall, on the island's quieter "quiet side" near Southwest Harbor, trades a bit of Bar Harbor convenience for noticeably better odds and a slower pace.
Schoodic Woods sits across Frenchman Bay on the Schoodic Peninsula, part of the park but rarely visited by comparison to the island — a newer, quieter campground with its own scenic loop road and considerably less competition for a site. Duck Harbor, reachable only by mail boat to Isle au Haut, is a genuinely remote, primitive experience unlike anything else in the park; it operates on a different reservation rhythm entirely and isn't really a substitute for a standard Acadia trip so much as its own destination.
If Bar Harbor's restaurants and the classic Park Loop Road views are the point of your trip, expect to compete for Blackwoods or Seawall. If you're comfortable trading a bit of convenience for better odds, Schoodic Woods is still genuinely part of Acadia and far easier to land.

Booking Tips
- September is the easiest month for Blackwoods based on tracked drop data — peak summer crowds have thinned but the weather is often still excellent, and fall color starts arriving late in the month.
- Saturdays see the most cancellation activity at Blackwoods — worth a close check if you're targeting a specific weekend.
- Acadia's season is short. Most campgrounds operate roughly spring through fall, which compresses a full year of demand into a few months — book as early as your dates allow.
- Seawall is a strong fallback if Blackwoods won't open up — same island, same park, meaningfully less competition.
- Schoodic Woods is consistently the easiest tracked site in the park if your priority is simply camping inside Acadia rather than being on Mount Desert Island specifically.
