Many Glacier is the campground every Glacier National Park trip report mentions — and for good reason, since it sits at the trailhead for some of the park's best hiking, with grizzly and mountain goat sightings a regular occurrence. Fish Creek and Apgar, on the west side near Lake McDonald, offer easier access from the west entrance. St. Mary and Two Medicine round out the park's Recreation.gov-bookable sites, each anchoring a different, quieter valley.
Camping Alert tracked over 500 cancellations across Glacier's campgrounds in the past 30 days — lower volume than the biggest western parks, which means fewer people watching and better odds for anyone running a standing alert.
What to Expect
Many Glacier sits deep in the park's northeast corner, surrounded by some of Glacier's most dramatic peaks and lakes. It's the trailhead for hikes like Grinnell Glacier and Iceberg Lake, and it's consistently the hardest site in the park to book because of it. The drive in is long from either entrance, which doesn't seem to slow demand at all.
On the west side, Fish Creek and Apgar sit near Lake McDonald and the West Glacier entrance, both giving relatively easy access to Going-to-the-Sun Road without the drive to Many Glacier. St. Mary anchors the east end of Going-to-the-Sun Road with views up the length of St. Mary Lake, while Two Medicine, in the park's southeast corner, is quieter and less visited than almost anywhere else in Glacier — a good option if solitude matters more to you than convenience.
If your trip revolves around Going-to-the-Sun Road, Apgar or St. Mary make sense as anchors on either end. If you're there for the hiking around Many Glacier specifically, expect real competition and consider setting an alert well before your trip.

- June is the easiest month for Many Glacier based on tracked drop data — early enough in the season that demand hasn't peaked, though check road and trail conditions at elevation.
- Sundays see the most cancellation activity at Many Glacier. Weekend campers wrapping up their trips create a real window worth watching.
- Glacier's reservation windows vary by campground — Many Glacier in particular sells out fast once its window opens, so confirm the exact release date on Recreation.gov ahead of time.
- Two Medicine is consistently the least competitive tracked site in the park — worth a look if you want to be inside Glacier without chasing a sold-out campground.
- Going-to-the-Sun Road's seasonal opening affects camping demand — once the full road is open (typically summer), pressure on every campground rises together.
