Mather Campground on the South Rim is the workhorse of Grand Canyon camping — large, centrally located near Grand Canyon Village, and open year-round, which makes it the default choice for most visitors and correspondingly hard to book in peak season. Desert View, further east along the rim, is smaller and quieter with less competition. North Rim Campground, open only seasonally due to snow, serves the far less crowded (but far less accessible) side of the canyon.

What to Expect
The South Rim is where nearly everyone goes, and Mather Campground puts you walking distance from Grand Canyon Village's shops, restaurants, and the free shuttle system that runs along the rim. It's a big, developed campground with both tent and RV sites, open all year, which is precisely why it's the hardest of the three to land in summer and around holidays.
Desert View sits about 25 miles east of the Village, near the historic Desert View Watchtower. It's smaller, more rustic, and considerably less crowded — a good trade if you don't mind driving in for Village amenities. The North Rim, across the canyon and a multi-hour drive from the South Rim, is a genuinely different experience: fewer people, higher elevation, cooler temperatures, and a campground that only opens for a few months each year around the North Rim's May–October season.
If flexibility matters more to you than location, Desert View is consistently the easier book. If you want the Village experience, plan for real competition at Mather and consider a shoulder-season trip instead.

Booking Tips
- November is the easiest month for Mather Campground, based on Camping Alert's tracked data — cooler weather and lighter crowds without the North Rim being closed yet.
- Saturdays see the most cancellation activity at Mather. If you're watching for a drop, weekend mornings are worth extra attention.
- Mather books up to 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov — mark your exact release date, especially for spring break and summer dates.
- The North Rim's short season (roughly May through October) compresses demand into a much smaller window than the South Rim — book early or lean on flexible dates.
- Consider Desert View if Mather won't budge. It's inside the same park, on the same rim, with meaningfully less competition.
