Watchman Campground is the single hottest campground Camping Alert tracks anywhere in the country. It sits at the south entrance near Springdale, walking distance to the shuttle that's mandatory for most of Zion Canyon in peak season, and demand for it never really lets up. South Campground, right next door, sees similar pressure. Lava Point, well outside the canyon on the Kolob Terrace plateau, is a different world entirely — primitive, first-come-first-served, and rarely full.

What to Expect
Watchman and South Campground both sit right at Zion's south entrance, an easy walk into Springdale and directly on the shuttle line that serves the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, the Narrows, and Angels Landing trailheads. That location is the whole draw — and the whole reason they're so hard to book. Watchman takes reservations further in advance and tends to fill first; South Campground often has late cancellations even after Watchman is fully booked out.
Lava Point is a genuinely different experience: a small, primitive campground on the Kolob Terrace plateau at over 7,800 feet, roughly an hour's drive from the main canyon on a road that isn't always open. No potable water, no reservations — it's first-come, first-served. It's not a substitute for a canyon-floor trip, but it's a real option if you want to be inside Zion without the competition.
For most visitors planning around the Narrows or Angels Landing, Watchman or South Campground are worth the fight. If your plans are more flexible, or you're doing a Kolob Terrace hiking trip, Lava Point solves the booking problem entirely by not requiring a reservation at all.

Booking Tips
- January is the easiest month for Watchman historically — cool desert nights, thin crowds, and the Narrows still hikeable with the right gear.
- Fridays see the most cancellation activity at Watchman — if you're watching closely, that's the day to check hardest.
- Watchman opens reservations on a rolling 6-month window on Recreation.gov. Mark your exact release date; this is consistently one of the fastest-selling campgrounds we track.
- South Campground is worth watching even after Watchman sells out — it's the same location, same shuttle access, and often has separate cancellation activity.
- Lava Point requires no reservation at all. If your dates are firm and Watchman/South won't open up, it's a genuine backup inside the park.
